Food experts and prominent chefs representing the countries participating in the G20 gather on Awaji Island
2019 G20 Osaka Summit Support Program
The “1st World’s King of Chefs Summit, and the 9th Culinary Artists International Competiton”

TOKYO, February 28th, 2019 - Pasona Group Inc. has established the “World’s King of Chefs Summit, and the 9th Culinary Artists International Competition”, a 2019 G20 Osaka Summit support program which was approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, in cooperation with Easteat Culture Industry Group, a company operating one of the largest food education institutes in China as well as conducting service improvement trainings for human resources working in restaurants in China and abroad. This event will involve prominent chefs and food experts representing each country participating to the G20 summit, and will be held from Sunday, June 23th to Wednesday, June 26th on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture.

Since 2008, Pasona Group has been making efforts towards regional revitalization by fashioning projects in order to create employment and new industries in Awaji Island. In addition to managing restaurants and cafés, which utilize fresh local ingredients and proposing a new food culture, Pasona Group operates unused facilities which have been renovated in order to further tourism as well as support traditional craftsmen. Moreover, an important effort is being made in order to create a system that gathers various human resources from all around the world.

The Easteat Culture Industry Group has a public philosophy of “Refusing to prepare meals utilizing valuable wild animals and plants” and “Reducing the number of chemical additives in natural and healthy dishes”. They are devoted to extending the healthy life expectancy of humans, aiming to create a sustainable food system, compiling and publishing a specialty book on food, and finally holding the “Culinary Artists International Competition”.

For the purpose of contributing to the realization of a globally prospering sustainable society, on the occasion of the 2019 G20 Osaka Summit, both companies will join forces to hold the “1st World’s King of Chefs Summit, and the 9th Culinary Artists International Competition” as a supporting program from June 23th to June 26th in Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. This event will have three themes: “food”, “health”, and “regional revitalization”.

At the “World’s King of Chefs Summit”, chefs and food experts representing the 20 countries participating to the 2019 G20 Osaka Summit will gather to participate to a 3 parts event: the “World’s King of Chefs Cooking Competition”, the “Eatology Forum”, and the “G20 Chef Gala Dinner”.

Throughout the “World’s King of Chefs Cooking Competition”, Mr. Zhenxiang Dong, the CEO of BEIJING DA DONG ROAST DUCK RESTAURANT, as well as the CEO and Principal of the school corporation Hattori Nutrition College, Mr. Yukio Hattori, were invited to act as the Chairmen of the Jury. While Chefs from 20 countries compete in a contest, they will also be sharing their knowledge and experience with food and their culture in order to deepen their understanding of other countries.

Amid the “Eatology Forum”, food experts gathered from all over the world in order to deliberate upon topics such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the eradication of poverty and hunger, the sustainable consumption and production, the conservation of oceans and land resources, and other discussions related to gastronomy. Furthermore, the “Awaji Island Declaration”, a declaration designed to kick off the process towards a self-sustainable society.

At the time of the “G20 Chef Gala Dinner”, in addition to the “Awaji Island Declaration” announcement, an award ceremony will occur in which a distinction will be presented to the Chef chosen as the Top Chef out of those who took part in the cooking competition from the G20 participating countries. 

Through this “1st World’s King of Chefs Summit, and 9th Culinary Artists International Competition”, which the concept of is to propose a healthy society by means of “food”, “health”, and “regional revitalization”, Pasona Group hopes to contribute to the promotion of the local economy and the development of Awaji Island by sharing this location and its surroundings’ charms.

Food experts gather from all over the world in order to discuss gastronomy related topics such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and a debate will occur concerning on the “Awaji Island Declaration” in order to move towards such a society.

 (Reference) Pasona Group’s regional revitalization initiatives on Awaji Island

Pasona Group has been tackling the issue of creation of new employment through recruiting and gathering human resources with a diversity of skills in order to revitalize local industries.

In 2008, the Group has launched the “Challenge Farm” to nourish individuals’ agricultural skills on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. The employment of approximately 300 young individuals was supported through these HR development programs tailored to suit people with different skills such as in 2011, artists and musicians combined their talents and agriculture to create the “half-agricultural, half-art workstyle”. In 2012, Pasona Group renovated a closed down elementary school in order to create a community activity hub. Furthermore, the “Miele” café, which offers cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients from the island and honey, opened. In 2016, in order to provide artists from in and out of the island with a market in order to sell their crafts, “Craft Circus” was launched. There is also conjointly a restaurant which utilizes local ingredients to make their food.


Even since 2015, artists are invited from all around the world to Awaji Island in order to perform throughout the island with the “Awaji Art Circus”. Furthermore, through the “Undokai World Cup”, a type of Japanese traditional sports competition, the Pasona Group promotes “reginal revitalization” and “health”.


Finally, the Group opened “Nijigen no Mori” in the Awaji Island Park in Hyogo Prefecture in 2017, an art media created from the wonderful fusion of worldwide popular manga and anime and the beautiful nature of Awaji Island as well as a glamping facility, the “Grand Chariot” last year.


In addition, a creative Oriental restaurant “Hello Kitty Smile” offering dishes incorporating elements from Chinese and Japanese cuisine and prepared mostly with ingredients from Awaji Island was inaugurated last April. By popularizing the charms of Japan and Awaji Island domestically and internationally, Pasona Group will encourage the betterment of the local economy and regional revitalization.
